Most Brisbane home buyers start in the same place: their own bank. Tom Uhlich has spent more than two decades arguing that is the wrong place to stop. "Banks only have access to their own range of products, so would they tell you if another bank had a better deal? No way!" reads the homepage of Boss Money, the Newstead mortgage brokerage he founded. The business has a simple pitch, summed up in one of its own headings: "Why go to 1 bank when you can go to 40+ banks?"
According to the About page, Uhlich started his career as an accountant and has worked as a mortgage broker since 2004, running two broking franchises for a decade before selling both. Boss Money came next. "Driven by a passion to do things differently," the site says, "Tom launched Boss Money with a commitment to offering clients greater choice, expanding the lender panel from 19 to over 40 banks."

Solutions over sales
Uhlich holds an Advanced Degree in Business (Accounting) and a Diploma in Financial Services (Mortgage Broking), and the business describes him as someone who, "while many in the industry focus on sales," focuses on solutions, with "a reputation for helping clients navigate complex financial scenarios, often where others fall short." As of June 2025, the site says, he had personally settled more than $1 billion in loans. Its awards list includes Top 5 QLD Mortgage Broker in both 2023 and 2024, and a place among The Australian Business Journal's Top 20 Mortgage Brokers to Watch in 2022.
The firm specialises in refinancing, first home buyers, self-employed borrowers and investors, and its FAQ page adds family pledge loans, which let a relative's property act as security so buyers can borrow with a smaller deposit and avoid Lenders Mortgage Insurance, and help for people with poor credit histories. A broker assesses each client's situation and borrowing power, compares loans across the panel and, in the site's words, does "all the legwork," looking after "the entire process from lodging the loan to settlement." Clients get a checklist tailored to their situation so their paperwork is ready before it goes to a lender.
Free for borrowers, and a free app
Like most brokers, Boss Money is paid by the lender, not the client. "Our services are free, as we get paid by the lender for doing the work that would otherwise be done by a bank manager," the homepage explains, adding that valuations and credit reports are also provided free and that the team services clients Australia wide. Appointments can be booked online through the booking page.

The newest addition is BOSSPULSE, a free app built by Boss Money that "checks your home loan in 30 seconds" and then "never stops watching, 24/7." Its pitch is aimed squarely at long-term customers of the big banks, and it asks for no credit check. Uhlich also explains lending on his blog with whiteboard-style videos, on topics such as buying a home with no deposit saved and the real numbers behind renting versus buying.
Clients' reviews on the Boss Money website return to the same themes. One describes how "Tom and Jen took the time to step out the process," with "clear and regular communication, diagrams, checklists and follow ups." Another, who refinanced, writes that "communication through till approval was fast and consistent, I never was left wondering where things were up to," while a self-employed first home buyer calls the experience "exceptional." For borrowers who would rather have someone else shop the market for them, that is the whole idea.
