Who we are

Brisbane Wire (brisbanewire.com) is an independent news publication covering Brisbane and Queensland. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the site, and what we do with it. Questions about this policy can be sent to [email protected].

What we collect

Reading the site. Brisbane Wire is a static website — you do not need an account, and we do not ask you to log in or register for anything. Like almost every website, our hosting and security provider (Cloudflare) processes standard technical information when it serves you a page, including your IP address, browser type and the pages requested. This is used to deliver the site, protect it from abuse, and produce aggregate traffic statistics. We do not use it to identify you.

The contact form. If you contact us through the form on our contact page, we receive the details you choose to provide — your name, email address, subject and message. These are delivered to our newsroom email and used only to read and respond to your message. They are not stored in a database on the site, added to any marketing list, or shared with anyone outside the newsroom, except where a story requires it and you have agreed, or where the law requires it.

Confidential tips. We take source protection seriously. If your message concerns sensitive information, you may prefer to contact us by email so you can use encryption. We do not disclose the identity of confidential sources.

Cookies and analytics

We use, or may use, Google Analytics to understand aggregate readership — which stories are read, roughly where readers come from, and on what kinds of devices. Google Analytics sets cookies and receives standard technical data, which Google processes in accordance with its own privacy policy. This data is aggregate: we do not use it to identify individual readers.

Our pages also load fonts from Google Fonts, which means Google receives the standard technical information involved in serving those files, including your IP address.

We do not run advertising trackers, and we do not sell or trade any reader information to anyone.

Links and social media

Our articles link to external websites — official sources, other publications and organisations we report on. Those sites have their own privacy practices, which we do not control. Our pages link to our profiles on Facebook, Instagram, Threads and LinkedIn; interacting with us on those platforms is governed by the privacy policies of those platforms.

People named in our journalism

As a news publication we collect and publish information about people in the course of reporting. We do this in the public interest and in line with our editorial standards, which are described on our About page. If you believe we have published something inaccurate about you, contact [email protected] — our corrections policy is to fix errors promptly and transparently.

Access, correction and complaints

You can ask us what personal information we hold about you (for most readers: none beyond any correspondence you have sent us), ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete correspondence, by emailing [email protected]. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).

Changes

If our practices change — for example, if we launch a newsletter — we will update this policy and change the date at the top of this page.
